Question by Shanizzel: Are silver american eagle coins good as an investment?
I'm not talking about investing hundreds of dollars on them. What I am saying is, you hear a lot of people saying a today isn't going to be worth as much later right? Well if I were to purchase a Silver American Eagle coin this year, would the or so dollars spent on it be better served that way or just being saved at home.

They could be worth millions 25 to 30 years down the line....

Question by Jem: How do you calculate for the value of an American Gold Eagle coin and How are the prices of Gold Bullion set?
Same as the title. Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by ibu guru
Gold and silver are traded on the markets. So are platinum, palladium, copper, zinc, wheat, corn, and all kinds of commodities. The prices change constantly during trading hours as traders buy & sell these. It's analogous to trading stocks on the stock markets, foreign exchange on the forex markets, etc. You can look up prices a lot of places, including Yahoo Finance, stockbrokerages, various gold trading outfits, etc. Most will have charts tracking prices over a period of time.

Gold coins typically sell for a premium over spot bullion, but again the prices are "set" by traders as they actively trade. When lots of people want Eagles, Kruggerands, etc, and supplies are tight, the premiums over spot bullion can increase sharply. Again, it's like trading other commodities. When the world is short of wheat and people want to eat, the price can jump quite sharply. When there is a bumper crop, prices drop.

Question by LBTNG: What type of Gold American Eagle coins are best to put into a gold IRA?
I have decided to buy a gold IRA, but there is conflicting information given by different companies.

Some say to put Gold "proof" American Eagles in it, because they are more valuable than non-proof American Eagles. Others say that it is not worth it, because the coins, when in an IRA, are only valued based on the value of the metal itself, and not on the collectible value, so this is just a way for the salesman to make a better commission from you.

Does anyone know the real answer to this question?

Answer by dmatt
The fees can be crazy on holding physical gold in an IRA, and many companies are no more than elaborate scams. If you want to own gold, buy the GLD ETF. GLD is the worlds second largest holder of physical gold, and its much much much cheaper to buy that than physical gold. If you still want physical gold buy bullion. Bullion does not have the collector value that coins have and as such your value won't fluctuate with the collector market, just the gold and currency markets. If you're not stuck on buying gold in your IRA, take a look at the bullion offered on ebay, thats a really cheap way to own physical gold and its easy to sell for cheap on ebay. I've done this myself, just be selective with what gold you buy, make sure its in a sealed pack and comes with a certificate from a reputable mine like Pamp Suisse.

Question by cl3071700: I am looking for advice when purchasing a Platinum American Eagle coin...?
First off i started collecting 6 months ago and have acquired coins from a Morgan to Seated liberty half to silver eagle, presidential dollar, commemoratives, etc. I purchased my first gold coin a 2008 buffalo graded by ANACS in SP 70(satin) Now i am looking to purchase a platinum eagle and have narrowed it down to a 2008 NGC coin. I am aware that these coins come in MS 69/ MS 70 with a regular label or the E.R. I like the idea of early release but would like to have a MS 70 grade. Looking at PCGS price grade a 1997 in MS 70 is listed at ,000. The value of a 1997 in MS 69 is 5 so this brings me to believe that i am much better off purchasing a 70 grade. (tho they did not offer E.R. in 1997) I am looking at this from a collectors viewpoint and would like to say that i own a ,000 coin (i am aware this may not appreciate in all cases) would paying 0 dollars for a regular 2008 MS 70 be overpaying by too much, this seems to suit my price range as i know platinum is around a G/ounce. i am trying to decide between the regular label MS 70 or an E.R. 69 please share anything advice/comment you may have. 21/male. thank you

Answer by FRED M
MS 70 is the highest grade possible it is the closest to being perfect as your going to get, it is also the most expensive if a MS-69 cost 0 then an MS-70 will at minimum be double the price. There is also the grade of Deep Cameo MS-70 this coin will let you see yourself as if looking in a mirror this is the most Expensive grade I know of. Good luck

You can send it to the many grading services, who for a fee, will grade your coin and place it in a hermetically sealed case (slab).

Question by orchid4242: When will they release the 2009 silver american eagle proof?

Best answer:

Answer by Taiping
No date has been set yet. It depends on how busy the mint is. In 2009 we will have 4 different Lincoln cents in collector strikes as well as circulation strikes this will take up some time the first of the year so maybe by spring or early summer. You will just have to wait for the mint to say just when.
