Question by Cakewalk: Should I have my gold eagle coins from 2004 and 2006 professionally graded?
I have 4 gold eagles (2004, 2006) straight from the US Mint. First of all, I am wondering whether I should grade it now or not. Secondly, I would really appreciate if someone can describe the process (concerning safety, or coin submission). Last but not least, I would like an expert opinion on picking a grading company (PCGS or NGC).
BQ: How much does PCGS or NGC charge for grading a coin?
Sorry My bad. It's a gold coin. 1 troy ounce gold.
It's non proof, so I guess business strike?
Best answer:
Answer by curtisports2 Before we can go any further here, no gold eagles were made. They're , , and . Also, are they proofs or business strikes?
Edit: OK. If it was me, I wouldn't spend the money. Business strikes are pure bullion plays, unlike the proofs made for collectors. Collectors do go after the business strike bullion coins, but they want the higher grades, MS69 and MS70 (which are not that hard to find for the last few years of release).
PCGS charges per coin for these, and you have to be a paid member. The best deal is a one-year membership for 9, which includes 4 'free' submissions. You have to pay the postage both ways. Not too bad, if you're going to use those 4, plus use their online tools like the population report and price guide.
But, that's only if the is well spent. In my opinion, it's not. According to their guide, for both 2004 and 2006, starting at MS63, there is only a increase per step up in grade, up to MS68. They start at 80 and go to 30. It jumps to 60 at MS69 and 00 at perfect MS70.
That's guide. At eBay, raw 2004 are going from 20 - 90, with the lowest coming a week ago and the highest in the last day or so. That's reflective of what gold did this week. An NGC MS70 sold for 14 two days ago. A PCGS MS69 sold for 03 a week ago. Yesterday it probably would've gone for 20. That would just about cover the fee, over a raw coin for 90. But there's no guarantee of getting a 69. A 68 or less is basically just a bullion coin.
For 2006, values are similar. I don't see grading paying off.

Question by Dewayne: Is buying Gold, Platinum or Silver American Eagle Proof coins (US Mint) a good investment?
I imagine this would depend of the how the price of gold, platinum or silver does in the marketplace, but would there also be a collectors' interest even if the prices of metals took a downturn?
Best answer:
Answer by GuamGuy Basic way of making money:
Buy low, sell high.
Look at the current cost of gold and silver and compare it to the last 50 years. Is it low right now? If you're buying "high" then it's not a good investment.

Question by ThaShotCalla: **URGENT!! **How Much Is A 1999 DOLLAR GOLD EAGLE Worth? ?
I was recently looking at currency items on Ebay, and I came across a 1999 dollar Proof Gold coin that was for sale, and noticed it had a "Buy It Now" price of ,355 dollars. I am fairly new to collecting coins, so I was hoping someone could please possibly help me out with a question I had about that coin. Is this coin a "very rare" coin? Is it because it's been graded by chance? Or is it a rare coin as far as the year? I have searched all over the web trying to find this out, and realized several sites that deal in gold coins had several .00 gold coins for sell, but the 1999 coin wasn't available in their lists, they had surrounding years, but skipped 1999. Is this coin a "very rare" coin? I would greatly appreciate your help & response to this, It's driving me crazy trying to find out an honest response by searching the web, It interest me because i believe i may also have this coin in a collection i have in storage, but mine has not been graded. Does having the coin graded greatly increase the value as well? Again, I would really appreciate any help on this, and look forward to your response. I Would Appreciate An Urgent Honest Response! The Link To The Coin On Ebay is - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...

Answer by Taiping The person selling the coin is looking for a sucker. Mintage for the 1999-W (proof) was 30,452. Looking at mintage's the 1998-W was 25,549. The scarce ones are 2004-W at 7,835 & 2005-W at 7,054. Now you know why I dislike ebay dealers, for most are very dishonest and some are down and right crooks. This is my personal opinion here.
there is a limited collector base to the proof gold bullion coins. In reality they are a government made collectibles so they can make money. They put a denomination on them only because without it they would not fit the definition of a coin. You need to read up on things before spending your hard earned cash.

Question by RB: What is the cheapest way to sell my American Eagle gold coins?
I have 10 one ounce 2008 American Gold Eagle gold coins that I want to sell.
I could go to the broker I bought it from, but he charges 3% commission.
Are there anywhere else that I can sell it for cheaper commission?
Best answer:
Answer by T.J. You need to call around to several coin shops in your area.
Bullion coins are in demand now. You should be able to get spot or above.
I sold some last week for over spot. The current spot price is about ,345, but changes throughout the day. I would not take less than spot. Call around and see who is paying the most, I would stay away from a broker. That sounds like a ripoff. Do a google search for "gold bullion + your city". The local coin shops pay the most. The spot price may go up or down by the time you drive over to the shop, but at least you know who is paying the most over spot.

Question by lauP: Where can I sell my 1991 American Gold Eagle 4-Coin Proof Set?
I do not want to sell it online like ebay or amazon. Any local stores I can sell to? Should I go to a local Jeweler?
Best answer:
Answer by Bobov Bobov I don’t know what cash4gold will pay. I do know from my past experience, that I sent them a scrap jewelry ring and they paid me .26. I rejected the offer and they returned my ring promptly. I then found another company, http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ that paid me 3 for the same ring!! and they enclosed a track able Fedex pack along with 0 insurance as opposed to some crappy envelope from cash4gold that you cant even track. I really got burned a couple of times using a couple of different cash for gold companies but with http://www.captaincashforgold.com/ I feel I finally found one that I could really trust with my valuables.

Question by çH®I߆IåN: What is the value of a 1999 MS 68 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle?
I have a 1999 MS 68 1/10 oz Gold Eagle, I bought it in 2005 for I think, but gold has obviously gone up in the last five years. How much would that be, it was graded by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) MS 68. How much would that be worth?
Best answer:
Answer by curtisports2 Believe it or not, ungraded coins are selling for as much, and in some cases a bit more, than PCGS and NGC MS69 coins. That's somewhere between 0 and 0, on eBay.

Question by what_do_i_know?: What is the difference between gold proof vs. gold uncirculated coins?
Specifically, I am referring to Gold Eagle coins. I notice the price difference can be substantial
As an investor, what is the best invesment? Does proof command a bigger resale value?
Best answer:
Answer by rhsaunders It isn't just applicable to gold coins. Proof coins are made with special highly polished dies, and may be double struck to give an especially sharp image. Because of the special processing and corresponding scarcity, proof coins command a substantial premium.
